Classroom Education

Students under age 19 are required to take in-car driver education in order to qualify for a license. Prior to beginning behind-the-wheel instruction the student must have either completed the classroom course or be currently enrolled in it. A Virginia Learner's permit is also required.

Each student will be scheduled with at least one other student. Then a schedule will be worked out. Each student is required to complete at least 7 periods of driving and 7 periods of observation. During that time the student will drive 150-200 miles while experiencing conditions in almost every county in the Northern Neck and Tappahannock. They will also practice parallel, perpendicular, and diagonal parking and will work in the parking lot maneuvering around the cones. Each driving class will cover a different area to complete different objectives.

At the end of the program of instruction, we will administer the on-road DMV driving skills test. . If the student does not pass the road test on the first attempt, we will provide one additional period of instruction and retest with no additional charge.  After the student successfully completes the test, we will issue the temporary 90-day license. This license will become effective when the student has successfully completed classroom and behind-the-wheel, has had his/her learner's permit for at least 9 months, has passed the on-road skills test, has turned 16 years and 3 months of age and has had the temporary license signed by their parent or guardian.

Within those 90 days, the student's local Juvenile Court will contact him/her to come to court to be presented with his/her license. A parent must accompany the student to court. The student will surrender the temporary license and learner's permit to the court.

We believe it is important for the student, parent, and instructor, to work together with the common goal of getting the student to become the best and safest driver he/she can become. We want the driving instruction to be a positive experience. We want it to be informative, fun, and provide experience with as many unusual situations (Ex. shared turning lanes, traffic circles, turnabouts with and without traffic lights, etc.) as we can find.

We think that Behind-the-Wheel Driver Education is the most important course your son/daughter will ever take. We have had a teenage son and daughter go through our program, so we can relate to your mixed emotions. All we can pledge is that we will do our very best to develop their skills, expertise and positive attitudes.
