Driver Education School of Virginia
DMV Point Reduction Program
AAA Driver Improvement Clinic
Back to Homepage
Our one-day, inexpensive course is approved by AAA and DMV to be taken for 4 reasons:
.....1) DMV required you to attend
.....2) The Court required you to attend
.....3) Your insurance Company offered you an incentive (Over 55? DO THIS!)
.....4) You voluntarily chose to sign up to reduce points.

DMV Required: If your license has been suspended or if you have accumulated too many negative driving points, DMV may require you to attend classes as a requirement for keeping your license or getting it reinstated. Anyone under 20 years of age who is convicted of a moving violation will also be required to attend a Driver Improvement Clinic.  Once you successfully complete our program, we will file the necessary forms with DMV to notify them that you have complied. Anyone with a CDL who is DMV assigned is required to take a special commercial operators class which we also offer. Make sure that you specifically register for the CDL Driver Improvement Program!

Court Assigned: The court may have "required" you to attend, as is the case for juveniles who are convicted of their first violation. DMV does not award safe driving points in these mandatory attendance situations unless the judge so orders.  Individuals who are offered the "opportunity" to attend in exchange for probation, dismissal, or a lesser sentence are considered "volunteers" (see below). Anyone with a license who voluntarily completes the program receives 5 safe driving points. While DMV will only award points once every 2 years, there is no restriction on court assigned attendance.

Volunteer: Anyone with a license may voluntarily complete a clinic in order to erase 5 negative points from their driving record or to earn 5 positive safe driving points once every 2 years. DMV will only award points once every 2 years, and you can only accumulate a maximum of 5 positive points.  A new driver who is starting out with 0 points may take the class in order to earn the +5 points and start the 2 year period over again. Individuals attending prior to going to court register as volunteers. One safe driving point is awarded every year that you do not have a violation.

Insurance Discount: Anyone 55 years or older who completes this program must be given a 10% insurance premium discount and some companies offer a higher discount. The discount is usually good for 2 years. Insurance companies may offer discounts to clients under 55. Check with your agent.
